The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) recently honored the NC HealthyBuilt Homes (HBH) program with its 2005 "Best Sustainable Practice Award," for Sustainable Policy/Program Initiatives.
First and foremost, NC HBH showed that it contributes to reduced energy consumption and improved environmental performance in many ways. For example, one unique feature of NC HBH is that a builder cannot just focus on energy and materials and receive a certificate. The program ensures that site, water and indoor air quality issues are taken into consideration by requiring that a builder take a minimum number of points from each section, thus creating an integrated approach.
The NC HBH Program is a collaborative program between the NC Solar Center, the State Energy Office, NC Department of Administration, and local building professional organizations. Visit www.ncsc.ncsu.edu for more information on the NC Solar Center.
